I had a wonderful introduction to the 5th graders today! This was a fun group of eager learners with a wide range of ability with speaking English. I introduced the concept of Koolulam and revealed the song that they will help sing. We had a great conversation about individuality and being yourself, and directed them to take a selfie, showing themselves as who they are as individuals. “This is Me!” One of my favorite moments from the class was when a young 5th grader made the connection that not only do we need to be proud of who we are, but connected it to is acceptance and celebrating other people’s differences as well! We then moved to the music room where we worked on their part for the song and had a good time learning through music. Following a wonderful talk-back with the Deputy American Consulate of Hungary, where the Lauder students had amazing, thoughtful questions for the speaker, I had my second day with the Jamim group of 10th graders. Some confusion in the schedule on their part made for a late start of rehearsal, but once we all were gathered around the piano, their support was great. I especially liked when we broke down the lyrics and helped put emotion behind the statements they were singing. They too will be responsible for sending in a selfie showing how they identify themselves. This can be anywhere from their Jewish values, to love of Country, or as simple as sharing a passion they may have in Dance, Theater, or an instrument or a sport. Following the day at the school, we got to tour Parliament, and then have a wonderful learning experience at the Shoe Memorial. This moving exhibit was made more special by our Rock-Star Judaics teacher when she made us question why the artist did not mention that those murdered there were Jewish. After she read a poem in Hebrew, we all read together in English the poem sharing the different names given to us at birth and by those who perceive us. A very moving moment as we reflected at the site. Then to top off the night we got to meet some amazing young humans that live at the “Moishe House.” A place for young people to come and celebrate and learn about their Jewish identity and share the experience with those needing the same outlet to find out more about their Jewish values. A wonderful night of sharing and listening was had by all. I’m looking forward to tomorrow! I hope we awake with good news from the election!
