What a busy day!

What a busy day!   We began with breakfast at the farm made with eggs from the chickens here and spinach that we picked ourselves.  Yum!   Sitting out on the deck overlooking the farm and with the San Francisco Bay in the distance was amazing!

Using the eggs that Debbie‘s chickens had laid provided me with an opportunity to tell the Morim about a lesson in diversity that is very effective to use with the preschool children. We talked about the fact that the eggshells were all different colors. There was white and shades of brown and beige.  They could show the eggs to the children and have the children discuss how the eggs are alike and different. Obviously the biggest difference is the color of the shells. Then I suggested to them that they crack open the eggs and put them in a bowl. The children can look at the eggs and be asked which one came from which color shell. Of course, they will not be able to tell because all the yolks and egg whites look alike. This can be compared to the color of people’s skin and how they may look different on the outside but on the inside we are all the same.

We then drove to San Francisco, boarded the hop on bus, and had an amazing three-hour tour of the city. We all agreed that this was the best way to see the city and are so grateful that you supported that.

We ate the bag lunch that we had brought with us at Pier 39 and watched the delightful sea lions. We visited Fisherman’s Wharf and a number of souvenir shops and then headed back down the peninsula. We did a quick tour of the entrance to Stanford University and the Rodin sculpture garden.

We then came back to the farmhouse and went over the schedule for the week. I presented the observation questions to Marika and Magda and we talked about important things for them to notice as we were at the JCC. We had some interesting discussion about how things work in Poland and about how they work with the other teachers at Frajda. Then went out for dinner and ice cream for dessert. Everyone was pretty tired so we’ve all headed back to relax and go to sleep as early as we can. We are all looking forward to getting started at the Palo Alto JCC tomorrow. ~ Fran
