Coming to SSG and meeting all the kids from Hungary was an absolute eye-opening and amazing experience! Although I enjoyed everything we did the entire week, the best part was definitely getting to know the students and spending time trying to learn as possible about the Hungarian culture from them.
In addition to learning about their background and experiences, our group also had an opportunity to teach about American culture. We accomplished this by doing activities together and through teaching a 4th grade class about a specific topic. Although we had originally thought that we would be getting our own class, because of time restraints, we ended up having only 5-10 minutes each to present to the 4th grade as a whole. Sarah and I used our time to teach the students about why we celebrate Thanksgiving and the 4th of July, highlighting the importance of gratitude and independence. Although sometimes we found the language barrier difficult, we used our creativity to communicate using hand motions or by finding a student who spoke English to help translate.
This trip taught me so much and provided me with so many new experiences. In addition to making new friends, it gave me a chance to explore a new country independently for a week and to see how grateful I am for the opportunities I have! ~ Nathaniel
